The Millburn
Short-Hills Chapter of the American Red Cross celebrated the 34th
anniversary of the Senior Meals Programs across America with a
special twist. Millburn Mayor Daniel Baer helped to deliver meals as
part of “Mayors For Meals Day” along with township residents Dick Wallman and Iris Stoloff. Mayor Baer participated in the event to
show his support for the community’s seniors. “We were very excited
about having Mayor Baer
participate in our event” said Barbara Allora, Executive Director at
the Chapter. “March For Meals” is a national campaign, in which
Meals-On-Wheels is a participant, to raise awareness of senior
hunger, and to encourage action on the part of the local community.
Senior nutrition programs across the United States promote March For
Meals in their local communities through public events, partnerships
with local businesses, volunteer recruitment and fundraising
initiatives. Mayors Day is a component of March For Meals that
utilizes the involvement of local mayors. To volunteer to deliver
Meals-On-Wheels call the Chapter House at (973) 379-4198.
Through coordination
with SAGE, Red Cross volunteers from the Millburn-Short Hills
Chapter deliver two meals daily to township residents who are unable
to prepare meals for themselves or who cannot leave their home.
The Chapter works in
cooperation with the Millburn Township Welfare Director, Senior
Citizen Social Worker and Health & Human Services Committee, in an
effort to identify residents who would benefit from the delivery of
Meals On Wheels.
Volunteers are needed to help
deliver the meals to township residents—this is a 2-hour time
commitment, from 10am to 12 noon daily, and can be done on a weekly
or monthly basis, depending on the volunteer’s personal schedule.
